Updated Business on new patches and certificates
Dear AKANA Family Members:
This summer is
full of AKANA news, so let's get to it. By the way, please email
me and let me know what AKANA business is going on in your school, such
as tests, seminars, events, etc. and I will be glad to include them in
the AKANA online newsletter. The
Living Legends Jerry Piddington Roast and Living Legends Seminar are
now available on DVD or VHS. House of Culture Productions did a
very professional job filming and editing these videos. The Living Legends Seminar featuring
the instruction of world champions Don Wilson, Jeff Smith, Howard
Jackson, and Joe Lewis is awesome! This is a must for any fighter
or instructor's library. It comes in a package of two DVD's or one video tape
which runs about two hours. The DVD package of two sells for
$49.99 and the VHS tape sells for $39.99. AKANA members get $10
off the price. The Living Legends Jerry Piddington Celebrity Roast
is a two hour production also available on DVD or VHS. I am very
proud of this great production which records our AKANA history.
The show is serious to hilarious. Hanshi Piddington retaliates
against his roasters with style and wit. The roasters are Danny
McCall, Dan Wilson, Ricky, Randy, and Gene Smith, Garry Dillingham,
Larry Bullard, Dennis Brown, Joe Corley, Howard Jackson, Jeff Smith,
Roger Greene, Joe Lewis, Eva Leazer Piddington, and Mr. Bob Wall, oh
yea, and don't forget Elvis who sang "My Way" to Hanshi with
some altered lyrics. There are lots of crowd shots. This DVD
or VHS production is going for $49.99. AKANA members get a $10
discount. Support AKANA and order your copies today. How's
that for a commercial. China
Grove SideKick Karate invites everyone to The First Annual Bushido
Karate Tournament - "A Good Reason to Fight!" We are
teaming up with Godstock, an organization founded in 1994 that has
helped over 55 children and their families through their work with
Charlotte Carolina Medical Center and Brenner Children’s Hospital in
Winston Salem. Competitors can raise money by collecting pledges
for each of the six one-minute continuous sparring rounds that they
fight. There are lots of incentive prizes. Everyone will
receive a trophy from our special guest, the one and only - Howard
Jackson! How is that for a photo op. He is going to take
time off from the Chuck Norris' book tour and come help us out with this
cause since he knows what is is like to overcome a disease like
leukemia. This event is going to spread like wildfire. If
you need some brochures, call me. For more information, or to
print an application or pledge sheet, go to www.sidekickkarate.com
or www.akana.org or visit
these websites for more information: www.howardjackson.net
or www.godstock.org. How's
that for another commercial. The
AKANA Hanshi Test in China Grove on June 26th was awesome! God
answered prayer and the three day rain quit just in time to have the
event at our campsite. We had 27 students who tested. Nine
students made Black Belt. Also, we had eight students who passed
the Gold Tomoe Warrior Test and nine students who passed the Silver
Tomoe Warrior Test. Congratulations to Mr. Vanlandingham who came
from Sensei Stewart's camp and received his Gold Tomoe from Hanshi
Piddington. I would like to thank Renshi Shaw and Nick Lukowsky
for bringing Mr. Piddington to our event. Congratulations is in
order for Mr. Lukowsky who tested and passed his 5th Dan Black Belt exam
by Hanshi Piddington earlier in the week. Also, I would like to
thank Renshi McClellan and Neil Godfrey for building the sweat. It
was humongous and held about 20 people. The
American Style Karate Team in Sandston, Va. is presenting a Renshi
Shaw's on the Lawn Labor Day Weekend Martial Arts Event on September
3-4, 2004, featuring a "Talking Stick Ceremony" on Friday
Night. Saturday seminars include: weapons defense, self-defense to
submission holds, historical roots of American Style Karate, old style
takedowns vs. today, rules of engagement "advanced mobility"
training, and the AOS Five Animal Form. Instructors include:
Kyoshi Steve Woodward (weapons expert), Rickey Dease, Renshi Nick
Lukowsky, and Renshi Chris Shaw. The cost is $25 with no charge to
camp, swim, fellowship, and relax. For more information, call
Chris or Susan Shaw at 804-328-0364 or email Chris at asktchris@aol.com. And
now for AKANA business. The new colored AKANA patches are
here.
check them out. Here is a summary of our upgraded AKANA membership
and promotion system and how to use the AKANA application forms. I
would like to thank everyone for their support and patience. In
order to keep paperwork at a minimum, the way AKANA will keep up with
yearly renewals is for each AKANA chartered school to automatically
renew their students at certain belt ranks in their school. For
example: We have 10 kyus or classes of colored belts in our
school. 10th kyu white, 9th kyu yellow, 8th kyu gold, 7th kyu
orange, 6th kyu green, 5th kyu blue, 4th kyu purple, 3rd kyu red, 2nd
kyu brown, 1st kyu brown, and 1st dan black. I am going to sign up
students who want to join AKANA before their first promotion, usually
when they sign up. They get the current patch (a red tomoe in a
white background). After at least a year of training, my students
go to the rank of Green Belt. That is when I will renew them in
AKANA. They will receive one of the new patches which will be
intermediate level (a blue tomoe in a white background). Their
next renewal will come when they reach the advanced level of brown belt,
which takes at least another year of training. This new patch will
be a white tomoe in a blue background. The next renewal is when
the student reaches black belt with at least another year of
training. All black belts will wear the AKANA patch with a white
tomoe in a red background. The patches will add a great incentive
for advancement in your system of study. If you are interested in
this AKANA renewal program, please list your kyu/belt system and what
rank the students will renew and send it to AKANA/P.O. Box 922/China
Grove, NC, 28023 or email us at the address below. Students
who apply for AKANA memberships or AKANA renewals will also receive an
AKANA membership certificate. Sensei Troy Price, who designed our
Tomoe and Living Legend certificates, has designed an AKANA certificate
that every member will be very proud to display. It looks
awesome! Sensei Price ordered the kanji for American Karate
Academies National Association which will be displayed on the
certificate. We are putting the finishing touches on it as we
speak and I will have them ready in another week. Now,
the only time a student will receive an AKANA rank certificate is when
they fill out an AKANA application marking promotion and providing the
date and rank.
AKANA
Application Instructions
The
AKANA application form serves the following three purposes:
1. To apply for an AKANA school charter membership or renewal.
2. To apply for an AKANA individual membership or renewal.
3. To apply for an AKANA rank certificate endorsed by Hanshi Jerry
Piddington.
AKANA School Charter Annual
Membership or Renewal
There are two types of AKANA School Charter Memberships:
1. Associate Charter (American Open Style)
2. Affiliate Charter (Any style with at least 7 American Open Kata in
common)
To apply for an AKANA school charter, a first-time membership fee will be
prorated to March 31. An annual renewal fee will be due on March 31. A
reinstatement fee will be added after April 30. The renewal fee will be
waived if the AKANA chartered school adds 10 or more new members within
the year term. Please check appropriate box and mail application with
dues to AKANA headquarters.
Note: Schools must be current on charter membership to receive their
percentage of membership dues and promotion fees.
AKANA Individual Membership or Renewal
There are two types of AKANA Individual Memberships:
1. Mudansha (under black belt)
2. Yudansha (black belt)
To apply a student for an individual AKANA membership or renewal, the
student must check Mudansha or Yudansha on application and pay the
appropriate dues to AKANA chartered school. The school administrator
will verify all information on application and mail to AKANA
headquarters along with AKANA’s percentage of dues. AKANA individual
memberships are renewed by belt rank, not renewal dates.
Please record correct kyu or dan and belt color of rank on application.
The student will receive an AKANA membership certificate with name and
rank, not an AKANA rank certificate.
AKANA chartered schools must give all students an opportunity to become
AKANA members before their first promotion (white-yellow belt) and an
opportunity to renew at intermediate level (green belt), advanced level
(brown belt), and each black belt level according to their ranking
system. This should give students at least one year of time-in before
they renew their membership. Different colored AKANA patches are now
available for extra incentive for AKANA members.
Note: Each AKANA chartered school must record their ranking system
with AKANA headquarters.
AKANA Rank Certificates
To apply a student for an AKANA rank certificate, the student must
be a current AKANA member. Applying for an AKANA rank certificate is
completely separate from applying for AKANA membership or renewal.
Please record date promoted along with kyu or dan and belt color of rank
on application. Students will receive an official AKANA rank certificate
recognized worldwide. This is the only legitimate promotion certificate
endorsed by Hanshi Jerry Piddington. The school administrator will
verify all information on application and mail to AKANA headquarters
along with AKANA’s percentage of fees. Computerized calligraphy is
available on kyu certificates for $2.50. Computerized calligraphy is
included on dan certificates.
AKANA Patches
If students are current AKANA members, they may purchase additional
AKANA patches for $10 each.
If
there are any questions, please call me or email me.
Also,
AKANA chartered school memberships are due for schools who did not add
at least 10 more AKANA members since March 31 of last year through March
31 of this year. You can check the list on AKANA
members page. Please let me know if updates are correct.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Renshi Ricky Smith
