AKANA Monthly Newsletter
June 2003
written by Ricky Smith
Dear AKANA Family Members:
We are excited to be
celebrating another year of Hanshi Jerry Piddington's AKANA. This
is going to be the best year ever in the history of our organization. AKANA
has teamed up with Hawaii Rock Productions to present The Living Legends
Celebrity Roast and the Man of the Hour/Roastee will be our Hanshi
-- Mr. Jerry Piddington! This will be a once in a life time
event. It will never happen again. Professor
Gary Lee, my wife, and I have been working hard to make this celebration
an event to tell your grandkids about. There is already a lineup of guest that include
some of the greatest martial artist and sport karate competitors that
ever played the game. This will be a fun-filled weekend that you
do not want to miss. So don't be a sleeper; get your tickets
now! It would really be nice if every single AKANA member was
present at this reunion to celebrate with their Shihan. I know it
would mean a lot to Hanshi. Living Legends is offering AKANA
members a limited number of special reserved tables. Click here to read about the Living
Legends Jerry Piddington Celebrity Roast! I will also keep
this newsletter updated with a lineup of roasters, special guest,
inductees of the Pioneer Living Legends Award, Living Legends alumni,
and recipients of the Living Legends Sport Karate Awards. Check
out some of our very own AKANA Living Legend Sport Karate
inductees! Unfortunately, I can not list the surprise guest, but I can tell you,
people are going to be surprised! Click
here for Living Legends Alumni. One of the Living
Legends projects will be a fundraiser for Chuck Norris's
KICKSTART
formerly known as Kick Drugs Out of America. Our goal is to get
all the AKANA schools to do a KICK-A-THON. There are cool prizes
and each school will have an opportunity to receive local publicity. Living Legends will host
a final KICK-A-THON on the Saturday of October, 18, 2003 for the top 10
fundraisers of each school. The top fundraiser of each school can
present their school check at the Living Legends Banquet. Living
Legends will sponsor a grand prize for the top fundraiser. School
owners can email me if they are interested. It would be cool if
every school did their fundraiser on the same date. I am thinking
when school starts around the second or third weekend in August.
Give me some feedback. Any school can participate; the more the
better! Now for some AKANA
business: 2003 AKANA are past due . If you are
becoming a first time AKANA member or renewing your AKANA membership,
please click on the AKANA Membership
Form and get with it. All dues past June 30th of 2003 will
require a $10 late fee. Your AKANA dues will help sponsor 2003 events
such as, Living Legends, Hanshi's Black Belt Tests, Hanshi's Tomoe
Warriors Exam, and Hanshi's American Open Style Seminars.
Remember, only active AKANA yearly memberships count for time-in on
AKANA belt rank promotions signed by Hanshi Piddington. I will
post all members by the end of June on this newsletter. Also,
AKANA school charters are due. AKANA is running a school charter
membership drive. Until the end of June, if an AKANA school signs
up 10 members or more, AKANA will waive the school charter fee!
Unfortunately, schools that are not chartered or renewed by the end of
June will have to be taken off the website and will no longer be
considered an affilliate of AKANA. There will also be an
AKANA sponsorship program for schools that join 25 AKANA members or
more. AKANA will sponsor a percentage of a Hanshi Jerry Piddington
seminar with the respective number of AKANA students. For example,
a 50 AKANA unit school will receive a 50% sponsorship from AKANA on a
Hanshi seminar. How about that for a membership drive! AKANA
is also introducing a program that will endorse certain events throughout each year. Credit hours for
these events will be recognized toward each AKANA member's rank by AKANA
chartered schools and Hanshi Jerry Piddington. AKANA members can
click on AKANA Training Log to record their AKANA events such as
tournaments and seminars. Members can click on AKANA Events
to receive an
updated schedule of events. Hopefully, this will
encourage AKANA students to expand their martial arts ability, sweat
together, compete together, and establish friendships. Our goal is to create a network of
karate-ka who have a common interest (AOS) to develop their martial arts
skills. So as you can see, AKANA is going to have an
exciting year. I would like to personally thank Kyoshi McCall and
Kyoshi Wilson for their support.
