Get ready for a SideKick Karate life-changing
family event
on Saturday, June 26-27! This is an all-day test from 10:00 a.m.
until... Bring plenty of protein snacks and water. The
AKANA test is held outdoors to expose students to the natural
elements of Fire, Earth, Wind, Water, & Wood. For the
first time, AKANA will open the test to students of all belt levels. A
formal belt rank test with AKANA is
required for grades of green belt, brown belt, and each level of
black belt. SideKick Karate will host only one formal test
a year, and this is it. Also, there will be a TOMOE
WARRIOR TEST for students who need to perform TOMOE for their
belt rank within the next year.
Parents are welcome at
any time and may camp with the students. Bring lawn chairs, umbrellas, sun screen, tents,
coolers, lanterns, etc. There is plenty of parking in open
field. Food will be catered on site by Lit'l Country
Diner. There will be portable toilets available. Students may
camp Saturday night. They can set up camp on Friday
afternoon or Saturday morning. There will be a Victory
Celebration on Saturday night. Parents must pick students up by 10:00 a.m.
on Sunday. If it rains, the test will go on. Do not wear your
good uniform; it will get dirty with grass stains. Bring your bo
staff and sparring gear. Do not forget your mouth piece.
There will be a
Warrior Sweat for students who will be promoted to Black Belt
(brown belt & up) within the next year. Bring shorts, tee shirt, bathing suit, towels, and
a wool blanket which will be used on the sweat lodge. No
jewelry allowed in the sweat. All students testing for
Black Belt must sign up in advance to reserve a place
in the sweat. Native American Indians used the sweat as a
cleansing ceremony to renew their priorities in life before
going into a warrior mindset for battle. All sweat
ceremonies of SideKick Karate will be based on Christian
principles.
There is a rank
testing fee of $50 for yellow-orange belt / $75 for green-red
belt / $100 for brown-black belt. Testing fees cover test
site preparation, boards for breaking, catered meal, special
guest instructors, special classes, and a practice mock
test. Regular
promotion fees must be paid before a belt is awarded.
AKANA instructors will announce
the students who pass on Saturday night. Belts will be given in a special
ceremony. To test under AKANA, you must be an
active member of AKANA. AKANA fees must be paid to AKANA
in order to test. AKANA applications are
available at the front counter or you can go to the website, www.akana.org.
There will also
be an opportunity for students to test for their TOMOE WARRIOR
AWARD. Students will perform for TOMOE one-at-a-time
for a panel of AKANA judges (holders of 17-KATA Tomoe).
TOMOE testing fees are 1-KATA BUSHIDO WARRIOR TOMOE - $25 / 5-KATA SILVER
WARRIOR TOMOE -
$50 / 10-KATA GOLD WARRIOR TOMOE - $100 / 17-KATA GOLD w/ DIAMONDS
SUPERIOR WARRIOR TOMOE - $150. These prices include
TOMOE patches, TOMOE medal awards, Bushido Warrior Statue, TOMOE
certificates signed by Hanshi Piddington, and beautiful quality
stirling silver and 14k gold handcrafted TOMOE pendants. Awards will be given in a
special ceremony at the end of the test. Previous 10-KATA
TOMOE WARRIORS will be required to perform ten kata as a group
to obtain their active TOMOE WARRIOR status. Names of the
10 & 17-KATA GOLD TOMOE holders will be recorded and
published as a part of AKANA history.
A 10% discount
will be given to any AKANA member performing both events - the
belt rank test and TOMOE WARRIOR test. Also, any
additional family member will receive an additional 10%
discount.

| Frequently Asked
Questions:
1. What
rank do I test for? Your next rank.
For example, if you are a red belt, you will
test for your next belt level which is brown belt. If you pass, when you get
your time-in on your promotion card, you will receive
your next rank. If you do not pass, I will test you at a
later date on the material you need to improve. To
receive an AKANA green belt, brown belt, or any level of
black belt during the year (June 26, 2004 - June 26,
2005, this test
is required.
2. What
do I need to know to pass the test?
Basics, kata, self-defense waza, grab arts, and fighting
technique according to your rank. I recommend everyone
read the promotion requirements in our training manual.
Each student will be required to perform breaking
techniques for their level of training. Students
will be required to spar continuously for 5-10 minutes
according to their level of rank. Also, every
student testing for red belt should be a 5-KATA TOMOE
holder; every student testing for 2nd Dan Black Belt
should be a 10-KATA TOMOE holder; and, every student
testing for 4th Dan Black Belt should be a 17-KATA TOMOE
holder. If you need help,
there will be special classes for all AKANA members on every
Wednesday in June
at the campsite, instead of the dojo, unless it rains.
There will also be a mock test on June 19, 2004.
3. Should
I test for my belt rank and TOMOE Warrior Award?
Yes, students who will be ranked green belt during the year are required to perform 5-Kata TOMOE,
students who will be ranked black belt
during the year are required to perform 10-Kata Tomoe,
and students who will be ranked 4th Dan Black Belt
during the year are required to perform 17-Kata
Tomoe. This will be an individual test, not a
group test. Remember, any AKANA member performing
the belt rank test along with the TOMOE WARRIOR test
will be given a 10% discount. Also, any additional
family member will receive an additional 10% discount.
4. What
if I am a Black Belt and have already tested?
All AKANA Black Belts (Jr. and Sr.) have to perform a
formal test for each Dan or Level of Black Belt.
If you do not need to test for one of these ranks within
the year, you are expected to show leadership and be
involved in helping with the test. This should be
cleared with the Head Instructor. There will be no
test fees.
5. What
if I am a already a 10-KATA TOMOE
WARRIOR? Previous 10-KATA TOMOE
WARRIORS will be required to perform ten kata as a group
to obtain their active TOMOE WARRIOR status. Names
of the 10 and 17-KATA GOLD TOMOE holders will be
recorded and published as active or inactive in our
AKANA history. There will be no test fees.
Make
sure you put your email on your application. I will be
sending you weekly memos on the test.
